The group was started originally by Richard Leigh and Tim Perkins in 1994 called The County Folk Ensemble, as a way for string players to be involved in a county ensemble outside of an orchestral setting. The name Zingaresque was soon adopted (which means ‘gypsy-like’). Since this humble beginning Zingaresque has grown to incorporate (10-18 year old) Northants musicians playing instruments ranging from; accordion, fiddle, viola, cello, bass, harp, voice, flute, sax, percussion, djembe, clarinet, banjo, guitar, piano and more. This year we have a junior & senior Zingaresque groups.
Past co-directors have included, Tim Perkins, Becky Price, Ollie Heath, Ben Cartland, Lydia Whittacre and presently Henry Bentley.
